AGJA warmly congratulates Navi Pillay on 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Africa Group for Justice and Accountability (AGJA) warmly congratulates Navi Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognised Pillay for her unwavering defence of international law, noting that “her commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass are constants in a long career.”

As a member emeritus of AGJA, Pillay has been a source of inspiration to her fellow AGJA members, who have witnessed her inspiring and steadfast commitment at close hand.

AGJA member Fatiha Serour added: “Our shared commitment to human rights and international law brought us together on many platforms, including through our membership of AGJA, where we advocated for, defended and promoted these principles. The respect I felt for Navi then grew into something more: a deep affection for a woman who is beautiful inside and out, humble yet, boy, so strong in defending the rights of those who cannot defend themselves.”

At a time when international law is increasingly under threat, AGJA hopes that this recognition will inspire others to stand up for international law and its institutions, including the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. It reminds us that the pursuit of justice demands persistence, even in the face of powerful opposition.

Congratulations, dear Navi, on this wonderful and so well-deserved award!
